Why I use Social Media

It’s okay to be skeptical about social media.

We see how people can use it, and we all have that friend who needs a timeout. How do we lovingly let them know that 3 posts a day seems to be breaking an unwritten rule somewhere, or that their latest rant was a little uncomfortable to read, or those selfies seem to be getting more risqué?

We live in a world where social media gives everyone the opportunity to be seen and heard. Anyone can become famous, anyone can build an influence, and everyone is vulnerable to the temporary high of instant attention and validation. So, I understand the question that comes to your mind when you ask:

What are your intentions Tim?

That’s a fair question to ask. If the recent failures of popular and influential ministry leaders have taught us anything, it is that good intentions and beginning well is not the same thing as faithful service and finishing well.

So let me be completely transparent with you...

My intention is to glorify God. I am who I am because of His work in my life, and I intend to spend the rest of my life communicating that message to those willing to hear it. I use social media platforms like YouTube because I believe it is a marketplace of ideas, and as God has gifted me with the ability to use a camera, I plan to invest these talents in communicating the truths of the gospel in creative ways within this marketplace.

However, and this is very important, I am just as susceptible to seeking my own glory as those who have risen and fallen before me.

“... let anyone who thinks he stands take heed lest he falls” (1 Cor 10:12)

If I have learned anything in my walk with God over these past 40+ years, it is that I am only as strong as my willingness to be transparent. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. So with this in mind, I am inviting you (the reader) into my accountability as a content creator and giving you the permission to challenge what you see me post or produce.

Why? Because I want to finish well and I can’t do it alone.

The message I communicate within the content that I create for YouTube will continue to speak long after I die. On that day, what will the viewer remember about me? I can only hope that they will see that “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

And they can too.

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”

Then I said, “Here I am. Send me.”
